Directed & Written by Sara Shikooh. This short film was a university assignment with strict rules and guidelines; no dialogue, no stylistic lights, and absolutely was not allowed to be a music video.
Using foley, an online sound bank, and lamps from the crew's living rooms, this comedic flick was inspired by the feel of 90's Sabrina The Teenage Witch and was pulled to life with a fun, upbeat soundtrack by Tosca.
"What I personally found the most challenging was our initial location change & the re-fitting of our vision to a brand new place; when I wrote this, I had a place in mind, but due to time constraints and our first day of shooting on that set, I had to make the decision to scrap the 6 hours of work we put in... and aim to reshoot over two days in a different kitchen.
My team did not necessarily love that plan. However, when we got to sit in the edit & take a look at the footage, we loved what we had and editing was a breeze! Ultimately, we learned some sacrifices have to be made to achieve the vision you had; there's always room to improve, and you must be able to prioritise the final outcome over all else."
The short film shows us the story of a man learning how to chef up spaghetti carbonara for a dinner date at his place that evening; he picks up a 'very helpful' cookbook, that magically helps him through his process of cooking. Spoiler alert: he is really quite bad at cooking.
Riddled with creative transitions and funny 'trick' shots to depict the 'magic' of the cookbook, this little film is the wonderful outcome of a term's worth of hard work.
