SS22 Trends We're Obsessed With

How Low Can You Go? Low-Rise Is Back & Here To Stay.

Every so often, like clockwork, a symbolic trend of the past pops up on the runway and we fall in love with it all over again. SS22 has brought us modern takes on our reemerging 2000’s looks, slinging from pops of colour to kitten heels, layers, and statement jewellery fit for hit R&B music videos. This year we see trends of bold and colourful monochromatic looks, sheer body-fitted dresses and tops, and even a rise of cut-out / patchwork clothing- let’s cut through the noise and shine some light on one of the biggest trends of the year so far: the return of the low-slung wasists.

As seen on Tom Ford, Miu Miu, and Versace runways, the Y2K echo of low-waisted garments is making a sneaky come-back for both mens and womens’ fashion, as well as in the blurry intersection of androgenous looks. This overarching trend has also been worn by some fashion fandom favourites, styled in various different ways with pops of other SS22 highlights- explore some of our picks, and vote on yours!

Emma Chamberlain’s Red on Red Minis

Internet sensation Emma Chamberlain’s style is one of the most sought after and replicated on social media. Clad in a Vivienne Westwood poppy red reworked Vivienne Westwood mini-skirt, we see red, red, red! From her stylist’s upcycling skills to the creation of her custom top made by independent designer @lapiin_lapiin, Emma has embraced a conscious and niche approach to her style.

With nods to sustainability, monochrome, matching two piece sets, AND a low-slung mini skirt, Emma is rocking Spring/Summer 2022 and giving us a perfect example for the books.

Julia Fox’s Low-Rise Jeans

Julia’s take on the low-waist trend is to snatch up a pair of scissors and get creative. The model’s edgy fashion sense has been making waves since early January, and in March 2022 she let us in on how she perfected her pair of Alexander Wang jeans into the eye-catching 2000’s dream they are now.

Dressed head to toe in denim, we also see elements of monochrome in her style- but this is nowhere near her first and last appearance in a low slung pair of bottoms (See: Gloved crop top and low rise black pants, paired with chunky black boots. Edgy, chic, riske!)

Doja Cat’s Subversive Get-Up

Also along the peak of spring, we see Doja clad in modern subversive OTTOLINGER outfit- with a black latex crop top giving the appearance of it almost wrapping around her paired with the ombre black, grey, neon yellow and murky red pants, this outfit is a punky, edgy masterpiece.

Styled with metallic acrylic nails, bright red sunglasses, a spikey hair updo (hello 2000’s!), and Swarovski crystal jewellery, Doja appears to show us the dark side of SS22. While still including pops of colour, she brings us a whole new level of ways to wear a low-slung waist outfit.

Hailey Bieber’s Plaid Perfection

Hailey’s definitely in-the-know here with her latest 1995 Clueless inspired outfit, a yellow plaid crop top over a pair of low slung cargo pants. Hitting all the right spots with fashion-obsessed Gen-Z, we see the demand for utilitarian cargo pants increasing by the day!

Taking a 90’s staple and spinning into the perfect early 2000’s get up is admirable, especially when Y2K’s utility inspiration still runs hot.

Styled clean and minimalist, she dons a white cropped tee, a plaid simple black sunglasses, and white sneakers under her baggy blue cargos. Is this the perfect blend of the iconic model-off-duty look and the buzzing y2k wave? We think so!

PS: Those sunnies are our fav. Good work, Hailey!

Vince Rossi’s Wild West Moment

Dressed in leather and latex, actor Vince Rossi styles his off-white, low-rise pants with a shiny black fitted vest, painted black fingernails, and accessories such as a chain, a lock necklace, and some silver rings.

While baggy low-waisted (or for men, low-hanging) pants were almost a 2000’s era uniform for the men in the music and fashion industry, here we see Rossi opting for a more fitted and modern take on the look.

We're digging the cowboy vibe, Vince. Men, take notes!

Paloma Elsesser’s Bold Blue

Low-slung waists on garments can be a controversial trend to have back on the scene, mainly following a sentiment of having the “right” body type to pull it off.

As a plus size woman of colour, Paloma shows us that your size isn’t what makes fashion stylish. We see her wearing low-rise cargos on her instagram, but here we see her clad in a low, Miu Miu micro-skirt and a cropped shirt + blue cable knit sweater, on the cover of i_D’s The Out Of Body issue, April 2022.

There's no correct body type, and we know that. Wear what you wanna, you'll rock it!

Bella Hadid’s Subversive Pixie Look

The icing on the cake is fashion icon Bella Hadid dressed in a fantastically pink full-sleeve, cropped, sheer pink net top along with her low-slung cargo skirt, a fun and femme approach to the trend we’ve been seeing.

Styling her outfit with her collaboration Michael Kors bag, she accessorises with metallic pink bold statement earrings and a silver choker / necklace to tie the look together.

Sequins, net, AND a metallic sheen? Who's doing it like Bella?

Embracing the 2000’s look, Bella’s style comes together perfectly in this dusty rose, Winx-y get-up.

Which look was your favourite?

  • Emma! ☕️

  • Julia ♡

  • Doja Cat 🐈

  • Hailey! 🍩

All in all, the low-slung waist is a trend that is making its comeback with the settling in of the obvious influence of 2000’s fashion and culture. From y2k looks being spotted on the runway, to utilitarian, cyber, and subversive fashion seeping through the cracks to make their statements, a unifier in the works is the low-rise looks we’re loving!
